Scenic Walks:

Leicestershire boasts beautiful countryside and parks perfect for long and or leisurely walks with your dog. Head to Bradgate Park, Thornton Reservoir, Ashby Canal or Burbage Common and Woods for some great views and refreshing strolls.

Dog-Friendly Pubs, Restaurants and Cafes:

Treat yourselves and your pup to a relaxing meal or drink at one of the many dog-friendly eateries in Leicestershire. Our favourite and closest pet-friendly places are:

Mallories Restaurant

Just a 5-minute stroll through the churchyard from Mallory Meadows is Mallories our fantastic village restaurant. It is dog-friendly in the Bar area and offers a great atmosphere and super tasty meals. Mallories is a great stop-off for a drink or meal before or after our short village walk here.

Mallories, Church Road, Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire, LE9 7QE –  01455 841153  – www.mallories.co.uk

The Malt Mill Coffee House and Bakery

This amazing dog-friendly cafe is in Barwell the next village to us. It’s a short drive 5-minute drive or for a countryside walk across fields and footpaths follow our 5k (each-way) walking route here. (We wouldn’t recommend walking down Barwell Road, there is no footpath, and it’s quite busy and narrow). Awaiting you is a delicious selection of home-cooked meals, cakes and sweet treats, great locally roasted coffee and a menu full of local produce. Water bowls and doggy treats await your furry friend. Do check their opening times and bookings can also be made to secure your seat.

The Windmill Inn

Another of our favourites, this recently refurbished countryside inn is a short drive away from Mallory Meadows. If you’re feeling more adventurous we have a walking route to it here. It can get quite muddy so suitable footwear is a good shout. Steve and Sophie run a very welcoming and cosy pub, guest ales and offer a fantastic menu. Their Sunday lunch menu has the best roast potatoes and I highly recommend the gravy by the bucket load, the homemade pies are a favourite in our house too. The Windmill Inn is welcoming whatever the weather, with a cosy wood burner in the winter and a sunny beer garden with occasional live music for warmer days, it’s dog friendly too! Booking in advance is advised.

The Hercules

Ollie and his team at the Herc are utterly brilliant!  A traditional Coaching Inn located in the sleepy village of Sutton Cheney just a short drive from Mallory Meadows. They offer a hearty Sunday lunch menu, with a very tempting wine list. You could combine a tasty lunch with a trip to the historic Bosworth Battlefield which is just around the corner. The Tams family have always thoroughly enjoyed ourselves when we have visited.  They are dog friendly too and have the most amazing historical map on the wall in an upstairs dining room…take a look when you visit. Cosy log fires in the winter and a sun trap of a patio for the summer make for a very worthwhile visit. Booking in advance is advised.

Doggy Days Out:

Let your dog burn off some energy at a local enclosed dog field. With open spaces and some offering designated play areas, it’s the perfect spot for your furry friend to run and play. Our closest is the Oak Leaf Dog Park in Peckleton, this is a brilliant new facility and bookings can be made online via their website.  Oak Leaf Dog Park is a 5-minute drive away or a 25-30-minute walk following quiet country roads.
Walking directions from Mallory Meadows are:-

  1. Follow the path at the back of the house into the Churchyard of All Saints Church. Head through the graveyard and down the track towards Church Street, turn right and head into the Village.  Walk past Mallories Restaurant keep on the left path and follow it round to Main Street.
  2. Take Care to cross over Main Street and turn onto Desford Lane (This is a very quiet road with ample space if you do happen to meet a vehicle).  Follow Desford Lane for approx 15 minutes and take the first right turn onto Archers Lane.  Oak Leaf Dog Park is on your Left.
  3. Retrace your steps back to Mallory Meadows.  (We wouldn’t recommend walking Kirkby Lane, it can be quite busy and it’s national speed limit in places.)

Some of our other local enclosed dog fields are: Secure Dog Walking FieldDadlington Dog Paddock and JP’d Pooch Paddock.

Retail Therapy:

If you like the idea of some shopping head to Leicester city centre, the ‘Highcross’ shopping centre is pet friendly and many of the shops allow you to take your dogs in too! The full details of their doggy rules and dog-friendly shops can be found here.
