If the idea of a local countryside walk and a pub lunch is up your street keep reading…

You can stroll directly from your cabin to a fantastic pub, across the rolling Leicestershire countryside, stopping off halfway to enjoy a tasty pub lunch and drinks at The Windmill Inn Brascote.

This walk can be linear, there and back (6.8Km) or it can be extended to complete a circular walk back to Mallory Meadows (8.3km). It’s a waymarked footpath across fields and there are a few stiles to climb, they all are in good condition and have dog access too. We recommend keeping your dog on a lead for the walk as some fields have livestock in them from time to time.

We have uploaded the route to AllTrails, to provide a map based view to the Windmill Inn.

Or you can follow this handy pictorial guide that we have created, from our most recent trip for a Saturday late afternoon lunch.

The Route

Leave Mallory Meadows via the gate into the church yard.  Follow the path around the front of the church and head up the drive and though the gates.

At the road, turn right and the after the second house on the left take the path near the 30 speed limit sign to “The Leys’ Recreation ground. “The Leys’ has a couple of football goals, a basketball hoop and a small play area for any of our younger guests.

For this walk you will need to keep to the park hedge on your left, exiting the park in the north corner.

Carefully cross the crossroads and access the field shown in WM5, follow the footpath across the field heading to the clump of trees in the distance.

Climb the stiles and continue through the next field, heading to the opposite hedgerow on the right of the gap in the trees.

Go over this stile and through the copse at WM8 over the next stile and continue across the fields through the gap in the hedge at WM9. Then, head straight over the brow of the hill toward the stile in the hedge as shown in WM10.

Keep along the path through the back of the scout camp site ‘fox coverts’ and over the small bridge.

Keep to the left of the hedge in the field with the pylons on hills (the ground was mined for sand 20 years ago which is why the pylons are raised) as shown in WM11.

Continue heading west, following the path as it turns north through Cadeby Quarry Silt Lagoons. This is an old sand mine that has been naturalised, it’s a hive of activity for local birds and wildlife.

Upon exiting the Quarry space, climb the stile and head along the tree lined track towards the road, as shown in WM16.

Once through the gate go north along the road, past the allotment on your right towards the pub.  Following WM17, WM18, WM19, WM20, and WM21. You’ve made it, you’ve done half the walk, now you can enjoy your pub lunch and some well-deserved refreshments!

Steve and Sophie at the Windmill inn offer a warm welcome and delicious food. We called for a late lunch one Saturday in August, there was some live music on in the beer garden and the atmosphere was chilled.  We thoroughly recommend a visit during your stay.  The pub is pet friendly and has cosy wood burners during the winter.

After your refreshments you have a choice –

  • Or continue along the circular walk, which is our favourite option.

If you choose our favourite circular route, head back along the road you arrived by.  Instead of joining the footpath, continue around the corner and follow the road as shown in WM22 for a short while. When you reach the junction in WM23 take the lane to your left.  Travel along the lane for 200m or so and the take the footpath on your right-hand side at WM24.

Walk along the path through the field as shown in WM25. Over the driveway, continuing along the path from the yellow post in WM26.

Follow the way marked footpath through the hedge and continue towards the hedgerow opposite. Over the bridge and up the other side towards WM27. Once in the large field with the big sky, keep to the path and head toward the cream coloured house on the far side. At WM28, keep to the right of the house and head to the lane, following WM29 to the end, turn right and walk along the lane in WM30 back to Kirkby Mallory.

Upon entering the village at WM31, turn left and cross the road to church street. Retrace your steps from the beginning of the walk back down to the church drive as shown in WM32.

Now it’s time to relax in your cabin and take a dip in the hot tub to relieve your tired legs.
