Travelling to Mallory Meadows

After a long journey, you might be eager to find a place to stretch your legs. In this case, Thornton Reservoir (LE67 1AN) is an excellent choice. Located less than a 10-minute drive from Junction 22 of the M1, this peaceful and picturesque reservoir can be found. With free parking and a flat 4km circular walk that takes less than an hour, it’s perfect for unwinding. Alternatively, you can head straight to Mallory Meadows, drop off your bags, and then explore our village by following the village loop walk. As your first night away begins, you deserve a fabulous meal. You can either bring your groceries and whip up something tasty in the kitchenette or BBQ. Or for a more relaxed evening, take a short 5-minute walk through the churchyard to Mallories Restaurant. There, you’ll find a fantastic menu and a warm, friendly welcome, complete with a dog-friendly bar. Table reservations are recommended.

Triumph Visitor experience, Old John at Bradgate Park & Space

Day 1

To start your day off right, begin by soaking in the fresh countryside air and scenic views. You could take a refreshing dip in your private hot tub, followed by a leisurely breakfast on the patio or deck. Alternatively, if you’re in the mood to venture out, head over to The Malt Mill Coffee and Bakery in Barwell—our top choice for a delicious breakfast or brunch paired with excellent coffee. Since it’s a popular spot, reservations are recommended. Once you’ve enjoyed your morning, you’ll be all set to begin your day of exploring.

Triumph Visitor Centre.

The Triumph Visitor Centre in Hinckley offers a free, fascinating journey into the history and legacy of this iconic British motorcycle manufacturer. This state-of-the-art visitor centre showcases an impressive collection of classic and modern Triumph motorcycles, highlighting the brand’s engineering excellence and innovation. Bradgate Park 

Bradgate Park spans 800 acres and features a diverse landscape of rugged moorland, ancient woodlands, and rolling grasslands. In addition to its natural charm, the park offers breathtaking panoramic views from its hilltops, especially from the iconic Old John Tower. The National Space Centre

The National Space Centre in Leicester is an ideal day out for everyone, though it is especially suited to space enthusiasts. Why not stop by the Windmill Inn at Brascote? Not only is it one of our favourite pubs, but you can also be assured of a warm welcome. Moreover, with an amazing menu that includes pizza, homemade pies, and tapas-style dishes, there is something to satisfy everyone’s tastes. Additionally, the pub offers a great selection of drinks to complement your meal. Since it’s a very popular spot, reservations are highly recommended to ensure you get a table

Day 2 Bosworth country Park, Everards Meadows & Twycross Zoo

Market Bosworth

The charming and historic market town of Market Bosworth is well worth a visit and just a short drive away from Mallory Meadows.  It is near the site of the famous ‘Battle of Bosworth’ in August 1485 it saw the end of the War of the Roses.  Take a stroll around the country park or wander through the town’s picturesque streets and the market square with its boutique shops.  For a more in-depth visit book yourself on a guided walking tour, or check out the Market Bosworth Treasure Trail. Stop off for coffee and cake at Jaspers or Maison Rose, and soak in the ambience of this historic town. There is a brilliant Market on Wednesdays and the 4th Sunday of every month.

Fosse Park & Everards Meadows

Fosse Park is located on the outskirts of Leicester just a 20 minute drive away. It is one of the UK’s largest out-of-town retail parks, offering vibrant shopping with a wide range of popular retail stores and eateries.  Adjacent to this bustling retail hub is Everards Meadows, a serene green space that provides a delightful contrast with its natural beauty and tranquillity. Everards Meadows offers picturesque walking and cycling trails, expansive meadows, and access to the scenic River Soar, making it an ideal spot for a picnic.  We have a great walk from Everards Meadows along the river Soar to Kings Lock read all about it on our other blog post here.  The area also features the Everards Brewery, where visitors can enjoy locally brewed beers and tours that showcase the brewing process.

Twycross Zoo 

Twycross Zoo is a 20-minute drive away and is a renowned conservation centre and family attraction. Celebrated for its extensive collection of primates and commitment to wildlife preservation. Spanning over 80 acres, the zoo is home to more than 500 animals across 125 species, including some of the most endangered on the planet. The zoo offers a range of interactive experiences, including keeper talks, feeding sessions, and hands-on animal encounters. With well-maintained paths, picnic areas, and play zones for children, Twycross Zoo provides a full day of exploration and fun. Its ongoing efforts in animal welfare, research, and environmental conservation make it not just a place to see animals, but a beacon of hope for wildlife around the world. If the last 2 days have been a bit full-on, for the final day of your itinerary we have included some more laid-back interesting options. Each is perfectly positioned as a stop-by on your way home or great for a couple of hours out allowing you to maximise your relaxing time at Mallory Meadows too!

Leicester City Centre

Head to Leicester city centre and take a wander around the Highcross shopping centre, or the independent shops and galleries in the Old town.  Why not visit the King Richard III Visitor Centre? located just a short walk from Leicester Cathedral, you can find out about King Richard III, from his rise to power to the Battle of Bosworth Field and the mystery surrounding his burial.  If you’re interested in King Richard III check out our other itinerary blog post here.

Our top recommendation to get to Leicester is to use the Park-and-ride at Meynell’s Gorse. Currently just £4.00 per car per day, with no battling the city traffic. The drop-off point is only a short walk from the Highcross shopping centre and the old town. There are lots of alternative car parks in the city centre.  The Highcross Shopping Centre offers a good central location for parking, but it is quite pricey if you intend to stay for the full day. Hinckley town Centre

Hinckley is a large market town 5 miles away from Mallory Meadows. Castle Street offers a mix of independent shops, cafes, and national retailers, it is also the home to Hinckley Market, held on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The market is a bustling spot where you can find fresh produce, local goods, and a variety of other items. It’s a great place to visit and experience the local culture and pick up some unique finds. If you love a bargain Hinckley also has a great variety of Charity Shops that can be well worth a rummage.   The Crescent is a modern shopping and entertainment complex that features a variety of shops, restaurants, and a cinema to grab the latest movie on a rainy day.

Hinckley Museum is housed in a 17th-century timber-framed building, this museum provides a fascinating insight into the town’s history and heritage. The exhibits include local artefacts, historical documents, and displays about the hosiery industry which was significant to Hinckley.

Burbage Common and Woods

Burbage Common and Woods is just a 10-minute drive from Mallory Meadows and is located near Hinckley.  It’s a natural haven spanning approximately 200 acres of diverse landscapes, including open grasslands, meadows, and ancient woodlands. This picturesque area supports a rich variety of wildlife, making it a favourite spot for bird watchers, and families.  Well-marked trails cater to walkers, cyclists, and horse riders.  The Burbage Common Visitor Centre provides interesting details about the area’s ecology and history. Additionally, there is a café for refreshments, and are also various designated picnic areas. The ‘Common’ hosts various events and activities throughout the year, you can check out the events here.

How to finish off your day.

To wrap up your day, head to Leicester city centre, where you’ll find a variety of fantastic dining options in the historic Old Town, particularly around St Martins Square. If you’re planning to explore Burbage Common or Hinckley town centre and fancy a drive afterwards for a delicious meal, we highly recommend visiting The Hercules Revived in Sutton Cheney. Their menu is excellent, and you can expect a warm welcome along with a fantastic evening meal. Reservations are advised.
