The picturesque location, surrounded by lush woodland, is perfect for nature lovers, walkers, and anglers.

A Brief History

Thornton Reservoir, built in the 1950s and owned by Seven Trent Water has been a beloved spot for locals and visitors since 1997, when it was opened to the public. Originally built to supply water to Leicester, the reservoir now serves as a tranquil haven and the perfect escape. The site is open every day from dawn until dusk, except for Christmas Day, making it accessible year-round.

Activities and Attractions

One of the highlights of Thornton Reservoir is its 2.5-mile circular track, perfect for walkers and cyclists. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll or a more challenging hike, there’s something for everyone. The Leicestershire Round and other public footpaths connect to the reservoir, offering longer routes for those who want to explore further.

For wildlife enthusiasts, Thornton Reservoir offers a rich array of flora and fauna.  You can spot numerous water birds, birds of prey and garden birds.  Keep an eye out for deer and foxes, too.  The diverse habitat is also ideal for observing insects including beautiful butterflies and vibrant dragonflies.

For fishing enthusiasts, the serene waters are home to various fish, making it an ideal spot for a day of fishing.

Facilities and Accessibility

Visitors to Thornton Reservoir will find toilets, and ample parking, including disabled parking bays with good views of the reservoir. The site is also dog-friendly, although dogs must be kept on a lead due to the nature and wildlife. With a small visitor room and a sculpture trail, a visit here is a delightful experience for all ages.
