The Owls of Mallory Meadows

Evening Echoes from the Owls of Mallory Meadows

As dusk settles over the Leicestershire countryside, Mallory Meadows comes alive with soft rustles and haunting calls from the trees. Among our most captivating neighbours are three owl species that regularly grace our skies: the Little Owls, Tawny Owls, and Barn Owls.

The Little Owl, with its piercing yellow eyes and curious daytime antics, is often spotted perched on fence posts or gliding low over the site. Despite their small size, these owls are bold and full of personality—always a treat for sharp-eyed guests.

Then there’s the Tawny Owl, whose classic “twit-twoo” call echoes through the trees after dark. These elusive creatures are masters of camouflage, blending perfectly with tree bark, but lucky stargazers may catch a silhouette flitting between branches under the moonlight.

And of course, the majestic Barn Owl—easily recognised by its heart-shaped face and ghostly white feathers. Graceful and silent in flight, they can sometimes be seen sweeping low over the meadows in search of prey, especially at dawn or dusk.

Many of our guests love spotting—or hearing—the distinctive calls of these beautiful birds, often while enjoying a peaceful evening soaking in their hot tub. You can identify them using the links to the RSPB website.  They’re just part of the thriving birdlife that now calls Mallory Meadows home. You can read more about our feathered residents in this blog post here. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or simply soaking up the natural surroundings, encounters like these bring a touch of magic to the Mallory Meadows experience.

Creating a safe space for wildlife has been one of our goals from the very beginning, and we’re proud to see these enchanting owls make themselves at home alongside our guests.
