Explore the Beauty of Bradgate Park: A Must-Visit on Your Leicestershire Break

If you’re taking a short break at Mallory Meadows in Leicestershire, Bradgate Park is a destination you simply can’t miss. Nestled in the heart of Charnwood Forest, this 850-acre park offers a perfect blend of history, natural beauty, and walking trails. Whether you’re a hiker, a casual stroller, or someone seeking a peaceful escape, Bradgate Park has something for everyone.

Scenic Walking Trails

Bradgate Park boasts an array of walking routes suitable for all abilities. For a gentle stroll, the main path through the park is an ideal choice. It’s flat, well-maintained, and offers stunning views of the open grasslands, grazing deer, and picturesque River Lin. Along the way, you’ll spot the ruins of Bradgate House, the birthplace of Lady Jane Grey, England’s “Nine Days’ Queen,”  which adds a touch of history to your walk.

For those looking for a bit more challenge, climb up to Old John Tower, the park’s iconic hilltop folly. The panoramic views from the top are truly breathtaking. Offering a glimpse of the surrounding countryside and even the city of Leicester on a clear day. The rugged terrain on the way up makes this walk a rewarding adventure for more experienced walkers.

Nature and Wildlife

Bradgate Park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. As you wander, keep an eye out for the herds of red and fallow deer that roam freely across the park. Birdwatchers will also enjoy spotting species like woodpeckers, owls, and even the occasional kingfisher by the river. The park’s ancient oak trees and heathland provide a diverse and enchanting landscape that changes with the seasons.

Plan Your Visit

A walk at Bradgate Park is a perfect way to spend a day during your Leicestershire getaway. Don’t forget to pack a picnic or stop by one of the charming tea rooms nearby to refuel after your adventure.  The Deer Barn Cafe and visitor centre are also worth a visit for a warm drink and to find out a bit more about the history of the Bradgate Estate.
